I'm now online here in Oxford, so, as promised, some photos.

In looking up info on the lake district in Wikipedia (because I know very little about the lake district) I came across this little tidbit:

"There is only one true lake in the Lake District, Bassenthwaite Lake. All the others such as Windermere, Coniston Water, Ullswater and Buttermere are meres and waters, with mere being the least common and water being the most common. The major lakes and reservoirs in the National Park are given below."

Apparently, I have no idea what a mere or water is and how they might possibly differ from a lake. I've certainly read the term mere in books like The Lord of the Rings trilogy. But I always just assumed they meant lake or pond.
